What... is real?  Are you certain you know what reality is?

What the hell did I just watch?I first saw  The Wizard of Gore about 7 years ago and remember not understanding it very much.  After watching it again, I recognize it was gory for it's time (1970) and see it as a cult classic "bad movie."  Other than these two points, I don't get why so many people like this movie.  Apologies to Herschell Gordon Lewis but  this movie was pretty dull and didn't make much sense. Spoilers ahead.
A magician named Montag seemingly cuts and dismembers women graphically on stage only to have them walk away in a transe but otherwise fine.  Hours later the women die from their respective "tricks" they went up for.  A talk show host and her fiance figure out how these "mysterious" murders keep happening.  Turns out, Montag who looks like John Carradine's Dracula hypnotized them somehow and goes on live TV and manages to hypnotize everyone watching. Everyone except the fiance who goes to the studio and pushes Montag into a fire he somehow started.  The next scene is the happy couple in a studio mad to look like a living room and the man takes off his mask and it WAS MONTAG THE WHOLE TIME.  He asks the woman if she has questioned reality and then rips out her innards but then the woman asks him to look into her eyes and SHE IS THE ONE IN CONTROL(even  though she is a bloody mess) and Montag is a figment of her imagination.  Cut to Montag on stage in the scene in the beginning of the movie.  The End or the beginning.  Clever.
The Wizard of Gore is the first in Lewis' trilogy but this does not make me want to watch the rest.  Granted, some say this was the weakest of the trilogy, I am still not interested. here is my impression of me when someone tells me they want to watch another film in the trilogy.

I found the supermarket music and awkward cuts the most distracting things about the movie.  There was bad acting but I can look over that.  It was also hard for me to tell the people apart because of their stupid 70's hair.  This is the third movie in this year's festival that has been a let down.  I hope the next one is better.  Also, I probably should not have watched  this movie after the last one I saw was Joker.  For my young readers out there, this was the same as going from fun drama class to World History.  I'm hip.
