"Chin, no pueder ser."
Chile, a couple months ago when I
heard that Marvel was going to put on a Halloween special starring Jack Russel,
I almost spit my water out. For you see, Werewolf By Night is
my favorite Marvel character besides Deadpool. Over time he has become a
very obscure character, appearing mostly in team-ups after his story for the
Marvel Max line. Anyway, to have this character suddenly announced as the
protagonist of a Halloween special, my favorite holiday and he was going to be
Hispanic AND it was going to be done in the style of the old Universal horror
films, the movies that got me into horror in the first place? This is
truly, truly, truly what it feels like when doves cry. I have a Werewolf
By Night issue #1 that was gifted to me a couple years back that is now
going to be worth a lot more.
Please excuse my rambling about
my love for this character and let's get to the special. Of course, I had high
expectations for this and boy were they met. The story, the
cinematography, the tone, everything was amazing. I really want to send a
bouquet of red roses to Michael Giaccino for not only directing this so wonderfully
but for suggesting to Kevin Feige that he wanted to do a story on Jack
Russell. This is to date, Marvel's most gory and violent thing which is
another reason why it is in black and white. Of course, we know that
blood and violence aren't real if they're not in color. The action and
deaths in this special are pretty good. The second best thing about this
special is that we are introduced to the MCU debut of none other than
Man-Thing. He actually had a solo movie back in 2005 which I reviewed
oddly enough for last year's festival here.
I like how in this special they kept Jack and Ted's relationship in tact and he
looks amazing on screen.
Clearly, this special was worth the wait and I absolutely loved it. So much so that I watched it twice and I really hope to see Gael Garcia Bernal bring this character to life in other specials, series, movies or even his own series. 8Cough* look up Midnight Sons* Cough. It could be a good vehicle for Blade and or Moon Knight or Ghost Rider, or the Punisher all of whom already exist in the MCU. I encourage everyone to go watch this special and appreciate the artistry and enjoy a really good watch.
