Evil Dies Tonight!
*Unrelated Note: Before starting to write the below, I was googling pictures of the new Michael Myers mask because it is now my favorite Michael Myers look and I stumbled upon this. You're welcome.
There us no way to talk about Halloween Kills without spoiling it and it's two Halloween prequels so take this as a SPOILER ALERT which I wish other outlets had done instead of assuming everyone watches movies the very weekend they are released. more and more each day I realize I hate people and if I could set Michael Myers loose on shitty online "reporting" I absolutely would. The Michael Myers in this movie would love it because the body count in this movie is very high. To think in 1978 he killed 3 people and 40 years later its almost nine times as high. This is really going to make Halloween Ends a very intense revenge/redemption story. If I was a big geek I would tell you that I watched this movie at the drive-in and what a wonderful immersive experience that was. Then I would try to make myself feel superior by making you feel bad for not experiencing this the same way I did. We don't do that here. One of the things that stood out for me most about this movie was the call backs, references and Easter eggs to previous movies both from this franchise and from other films.
Hallowen Kills uses flashback sequences to expand on the 1978 story and also to fill some gaps. through the mechanism of flashbacks, we get to see more Lonnie Elam from the original, we actually see the dead half-eaten dog talked about by the police officers, and of course we get some more Dr. Loomis scenes ( skillfully done with the help of an actor wearing prosthetics). We see the masks of Halloween III even though it is no longer cannon and we get to find out what Tommy Doyle and Lindsey are up to now. All these details do an excellent job of connecting all three films together and make it a more enjoyable experience. In addition to these Halloween callbacks and references I noticed other ones that I may have made up in my head but still made the movie stand out for me.
The most notable reference that I put together in my head was that of Frankenstein. Towards the end of the movie, Frankenstein is trapped in a building which is then set on fire. Everyone assumes he is dead but to the surprise of people who don't know how monsters work, he is very much alive. just burned. Michael Myers and Frankenstein faced these same obstacles with the only difference being Michael slaughtered a couple people. Anyway, this movie also deals with the idiocy of mob mentality. Armed with anger and fear instead of facts, the mob in this mob in this movie manage to corner an innocent man into a lobby thinking it's Michael, even though Michael's mug shot was all over the news. Instead of the old torches and pitchforks, they are armed with guns and other home made weapons. Like Erik in 1922's The Phantom of the Opera in the middle of the bridge, he is cornered from both sides of the lobby, he panics and jumps to his death. This one is not on Michael but we're not going to talk about that. After a lot of murders and destruction, the movie ends with a bit of a cliffhanger when...
