Julie, get your white as death-chalky ass corpse in the car- now.

We end this year's festival the same way we began, with a teenage female centric coming of age film from the late 90's.  Coincidentally, both films also star the two breakout stars of the 90's show Party of Five which I never watched because at the time, the testosterone in my body would not allow me to be interested in such things. Back in 1997, the main reason I wanted to watch  I Know What You Did Last Summer was because of Sarah Michelle Gellar who I had the biggest crush on because she was so pretty and badass on Buffy.   I remember thinking that the movie was ok but nothing really memorable.  I did notice all the gratuitous shots of  J-Love's cleavage but I couldn't care less because Sarah. Watching this in 2021, the movie feels dated and I notice now flaws that I did not notice as much back then.

If I was asked  to describe the dialogue between the teenagers in this film with one word, it would be "cringey."  Kevin Williamson wrote this movie and my guy, I was about the same age as these characters at that time and can confirm we definitely did not speak like that. It's as if  he was asked to come up with whiney, overdramatic teenage generalizations and exaggerations and then he just stayed in that lane.  Ol' Kevin also wrote one of my favorite (late 90's again) horror movies; Scream which I think is brilliant for its time... aside from the dialogue between teenagers.  It's strange because he also wrote for Dawson's Creek so one would think he would have teenage vernacular and dialogue down but that's certainly not the case.  To be fair, I also did not watch much of Dawson's Creek because of the testosterone thing.

Much like The Craft, this movie feels dated; the soundtrack, the fashion, the cars, the technology (specifically pay phones and the extra thicc laptop above).  If this movie took place now, there would be street cameras and cell phones everywhere which would undoubtedly land the children in jail for a whole hour until their parents bailed them out. It will be interesting to see how the I Know What You Did Last Summer series will deal with the plot.  Not that interesting because I shan't be watching, even though all I have to do is push the "play"  button 2 inches from here. Hopefully they do well and in their version explain why the killer goes around murdering innocent people who are in the way when who he's really after is the group of friends.  We never find out how he cleans up and gets rid of the bodies so fast and how he manages to hide so effectively.  It's like the 90's equivalent of ghosting but with murder.

As I am writing this, I have  I Still Know What You Did Last Summer playing in the background and there's voodoo, Jack Black in dreads and Mekhi Phifer.  I think I prefer the first film where everybody looked young  and Jennifer Love Hewitt didn't ruin her face with plastic surgery. ohhh I'm a saucy bitch. Just kidding, no shade, the only shade I have is for Freddy Prinze Jr who ended up meeting Sarah Michelle Gellar on this film and then went on to marry her... jerk.  Thanks for reading, see you next year and have a happy Halloween!
